Techniques

At Soft Tissue Clinic we use myofascial release, trigger point therapy, craniosacral therapy and clinical massage techniques such as soft tissue release, harmonics and stretching to effectively release restrictions and adhesions in the affected soft tissue structures and relieve pain and discomfort.

We will assess you on your first visit to develop a treatment programme tailored to your individual requirements. Most conditions require 2-6 weekly 55 minute treatments to make an effective and lasting improvement. We then recommend an ongoing maintenance programme of treatments every 4-6 weeks, combined with aftercare advice to help you manage and maintain progress between treatments.

Myofascial Release
Myo – meaning muscle – fascia(l) – the network of connective soft tissue which interlinks all parts of the body – release.
Muscular restrictions in fascia can occur as a result of physical or even emotional trauma and repetitive strain and overuse. This causes the fascia to become stuck and dehydrated at cellular level which leads to myofascial pain. Myofascial release is a powerful muscle energy technique which releases fascial restrictions and restores full flexibility and hydration to muscles and other soft tissues. It is also extremely effective in the release of scar tissue whether caused by injury or surgery.

Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger points are areas of muscle tissue which have become permanently contracted. They are often tender to the touch and can cause pain either in the area of the restriction or referred into other parts of the body in recognisable pain patterns. For example, trigger points in the neck and shoulder can contribute to pain in the forearm and wrist. We can treat a range of conditions using pressure to release specific trigger points in conjunction with myofascial release to also release restrictions in the surrounding fascia and connective soft tissues.

Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
Craniosacral therapy is a subtle technique which assists the body’s natural ability to heal itself. CST is used to detect and correct imbalances in the craniosacral system which consists of the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull, face and jaw (which make up the cranium) down to the sacrum or tailbone area. CST work can affect all areas of the body to help release tension, reduce physical aches and pains, improve acute and chronic conditions, reduce emotional stress and generally improve health, wellbeing and vitality.

Soft Tissue Release
Soft tissue release is a combination of stretching and pressure techniques applied to specific muscles where muscle fibres are congested or restricted. Soft tissue release can be very effective at increasing range of movement, relieving pain, preventing injury and helping to repair existing injuries.

Harmonics or Rebounding
Research has demonstrated that passive motion is important in the repair process in both acute and chronic soft tissue conditions. Harmonics, or rebounding, is a gentle and rhythmic oscillatory technique which helps to trigger this soft tissue repair and can be used effectively in combination with a number of other bodywork techniques.

brighton massage treatmentsStretching
Stretching is extremely effective on soft tissue where fascial and muscular restrictions and adhesions have already been released through myofascial release and trigger point therapy. Stretching helps to strengthen and relax individual muscles, increase flexibility and reduce the risk of future injury. We can show you self stretches to do so that you can continue to benefit from the effects of your treatments at home.

Clinical Massage
Clinical massage is a collective term for a number of bodywork techniques including soft tissue release, deep tissue work and stretching.

Hot & Cold Therapy
The use of hot and cold in treatments can be effective for a wide range of conditions. We mainly use hot and cold basalt stones where appropriate in treatments. The application of cold helps to reduce swelling, decreases inflammation and pain and can be used in the treatment of acute injuries. Heat can help to relax tight muscles, fascia and other connective soft tissues and is particularly effective for the treatment of chronic conditions and older injuries.
